The Book of the Dance, GENTHE, Arnold
3 GENTHE, Arnold The Book of the Dance

GENTHE, ARNOLD. The Book of the Dance, New York: Michael Kennerley, 1916. Quarto, first edition, pp. xvii, 18-230, color frontis, light brown cloth boards with gilt lettering on spine and front gilt outline of a nude dancer inside an oval frame on front, halftone and autochrome photos of famous and unknown dancers, one photo per plate. Former owner has extra-illustrated this copy with magazine cutouts of dancers. The autochromes here are state-of-the-art color printing. Alessandro Bertolotti, in Books of Nudes (pp. 105), wrote: Originally from Germany, Arnold Genthe was the portraitist for the celebrities of the time, from Theodore Roosevelt to Greta Garbo." Completely in tune with his time, Genthe was strictly a pictorialist, freezing his dancers in painterly images. He may have intentionally blurred the nudes a bit, as he did with his nudes elsewhere. In any case the more famous performers here (Isadora Duncan, Anna Pavlowa, Maud Allan and others) have their clothes on. Condition of this book: Very good and sound with wear at spine ends and joints, loose threads in cloth. Ordinary age toning inside, with a few spots of soiling.

One Mind's Eye, NEWMAN, Arnold.
6 NEWMAN, Arnold. One Mind's Eye
0879230940 / 9780879230944
NEWMAN, ARNOLD. One Mind's Eye, Boston: David R. Godine, 1974. Oblong quarto, priority unknown to me, pp. xix, 192 photo plates, 12 (appendix, technical data etc.), black cloth with silver lettering stamped on spine and upper board, duotone photos. A thorough treatment of the 20th-century photographer's career, including the famous "Yaacou Agam" collage, and also photos that establish Newman as more than just a brilliant celebrity photographer. Robert Hirsch, in his photo history "Seizing the Light": Newman's favorite procedure was to bring his studio to his subjects, integrating their personalities with their surroundings, thereby affirming the subject's position, occupation and status to an audience unfamiliar with the subject." Condition of this book: Boards slightly bowing forward, jacket has a chip, a short tear and other minor wear. Leaves clean and tight but at this writing smell of humid storage (will likely dissipate with dry storage), images fine.
