Linda McCartney's Sixties, Portrait of an Era, McCARTNEY, Linda
2 McCARTNEY, Linda Linda McCartney's Sixties, Portrait of an Era
0821219596 / 9780821219591
McCARTNEY, LINDA. Linda McCartney's Sixties, Portrait of an Era, Boston: Bulfinch, 1992. Square quarto, first North American edition, pp. 176, black cloth boards with white lettering on upper board and spine, duotone and color photos by the great rock photographer Linda McCartney, short intro by her husband, Paul McCartney. Linda was one of the best photographers of this genre, so of course the pictures here are brilliant, but what's just as good about this book is her commentary, as most photographers are not such terrific writers. Linda is vivid and candid. At an Otis Redding concert in Central Park: "This was the first night I smoked pot. I remember seeing people going into the zoo and turning on the monkeys by blowing smoke in their cages." What's more Sixties than that? Condition of this book: A bright, near fine copy showing very little wear; boards a bit rubbed at edges, jacket has no tears. Collectible, best I've seen.

One Mind's Eye, NEWMAN, Arnold.
3 NEWMAN, Arnold. One Mind's Eye
0879230940 / 9780879230944
NEWMAN, ARNOLD. One Mind's Eye, Boston: David R. Godine, 1974. Oblong quarto, priority unknown to me, pp. xix, 192 photo plates, 12 (appendix, technical data etc.), black cloth with silver lettering stamped on spine and upper board, duotone photos. A thorough treatment of the 20th-century photographer's career, including the famous "Yaacou Agam" collage, and also photos that establish Newman as more than just a brilliant celebrity photographer. Robert Hirsch, in his photo history "Seizing the Light": Newman's favorite procedure was to bring his studio to his subjects, integrating their personalities with their surroundings, thereby affirming the subject's position, occupation and status to an audience unfamiliar with the subject." Condition of this book: Boards slightly bowing forward, jacket has a chip, a short tear and other minor wear. Leaves clean and tight but at this writing smell of humid storage (will likely dissipate with dry storage), images fine.

Nude in a jazz club, STILES, James.
5 STILES, James. Nude in a jazz club

STILES, JAMES. Series of 6 lounge scenes, undated (later 20th century). Large gelatin silver prints (14x11 inches), 4 toned blue, 2 untoned, one with the stamp of Stiles on the reverse. The photographer is a well-known fashion shooter who has exhibited at galleries on his own and with bigger names such as Helmut Newton, according to his website. And one can easily see the Newton influence in these offbeat jazz club setups. In fact, this series would make a great display in a lounge setting. Condition of these prints: Near fine with some minor creasing; each of the untoned photos has a tiny tear at the edge.
