2 Various artists. Chinese opera-style costume designs

[Costume design.] Folio of 57 color lithographs showing various design motifs for Chinese opera-style outfits, unknown artists, 1957. Prints measure slightly less than 15x13 inches or 37x32cm, in a wooden box with silk-covered fold-over boards and a four-page index and introduction, in Chinese. A former owner has written an English translation of some of the text as follows. Title: "Sketches from Chinese opera-style outifts." Summary of introduction: "all these sketches of Chinese opera-style outfits have been collected from different on the mainland, China. (It took many months for this special collection.)" "This is the last available copy in HK market." Some of the plates have 2 or more images, and the index calls for 73 total. The present set is lacking four images, probably on three plates. What's here shows bright and lively designs with various traditional motifs including dragons, flowers, colorful birds and abstract themes. Condition of this folio: Prints mostly fine but some have light spotting/foxing visible in margins. Box is fine but fold-over covers are cracked at joints.

5 Various Boston photographers. Minette album

Various Boston photographers. Minette album, 105 miniature photographs, mid-19th-century albumen prints. Typical CDV album size (about 6x5 inches and fat), 25 leaves, all edges gilt with an impressed floral pattern, brown leather boards with gilt lettering on spine, gilt floral decoration and debossed pattern on boards, 2 brass clasps, 4 white buttons on each board. Resembles a CDV album but each leaf has windows for 4 little photos, about 2x1.5 inches or half the size of a CDV. Some are group shots, some are hand-colored. I've never before had a minette album up in here, so I checked online reference and various photo history books to get some background on this format. I found nothing. The minette may be a Boston-area phenomenon that never caught on with the rest of us, like candle-pin bowling. Anyway all the photographers are from Boston, including Richardson & Cleaveland, Joseph Babb, Hardy, McCormick, and The Famous Photograph and Minette Rooms at 22 Winter St. This book is gorgeous, with bright, shiny edges and functioning clasps, boards worn at the edges with some loss at the bottom of the spine. The photos are generally fine quality with little fading and occasional pencil notes identifying the subjects.
