Travels Comprising Observations Made During a Residence in the Tarentaise ..., BAKEWELL, R.
5 BAKEWELL, R. Travels Comprising Observations Made During a Residence in the Tarentaise ...

BAKEWELL, R. Travels Comprising Observations Made During a Residence in the Tarentaise ..., in 2 volumes, London: Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown, 1823. Octavo, first editions, pp. 8 (ads), xvi, 381, 3 hand-colored aquatints; vii, 447, 1 color plate (frontispiece), contemporary three-quarter maroon calf over maroon cloth, gilt lettering inside 4 of 5 spine compartments, rehinged with added endpages to repair cracked joints, edges untrimmed. Provenance: from the collection of the mountaineer Vernon Howard, with his bookplates on the front pastedowns; title pages have inadequately erased notes identifying the books as from the library of the Governor's Company (a bank in Ireland). Written as a report on geology but also to entertain English readers who, the author says, rarely if ever visit the parts of Europe covered here. In addition to the Tarentaise, the title mentions the Grecian and Pennine Alps, Switzerland and Auvergne. See Abbey Travel 56 and Tooley 75. Tooley paginates the 4 color plates differently from those in the present set, but all are intact here. Condition of these books: Good and sound with scattered dusty stains as if from fingerprints, but generally clean, very little foxing.

Photographs of Edinburgh, BALLANTYNE, R.M.
6 BALLANTYNE, R.M. Photographs of Edinburgh

BALLANTYNE, R.M. Photographs of Edinburgh by Archibald Burns, Glasgow et al: Andrew Duthie et al., no date (1868, according to British Library). Octavo, priority unknown to me, pp. 84, 3 (ads), green cloth boards with gilt lettering inside gilt border to upper panel, 12 plates with albumen prints by Archibald Burns, measuring about 8x10cm. "Burns was based in Edinburgh between 1858, when he is first recorded as a member of the Photographic Society of Scotland, and his death in the early 1880s. Burns made his living principally from selling stock-images of Edinburgh for the burgeoning tourist market. He also provided photographs to illustrate books of Edinburgh," says the website of the National Library of Scotland. OCLC locate copies at 7 U.S. libraries, many more at U.K. and Canadian institutions, but it is scarce in the marketplace. Duthie published various books like this, including "Photographs of Dublin" in 1867. Condition of this book: Boards darkened, rubbed at edges, cloth is bubbling in spots. Leaves also darkened in spots, some of the photos are loose (but present), some have glue stains. The Knox House photo shown below is probably the worst of them.

Folio, Copy No. 1 of an edition limited to 1,000, unpaginated with 25 collotype plates, tan linen boards quarter-bound in black morocco, rebacked, slipcased. Parr & Badger, V.1, p. 81: "The images are close in style to those made by Paul Strand in Mexico in 1932-4, although Bruehl's pictures do not display the sense of suffering that colors much of Strand's work. ... The book is an interesting demonstration of the kind of formalist modernism that does not even pretend to make any social analysis of what is being photographed." Scarce. Six Months’ Residence and Travels in Mexico, BULLOCK, W.,
9 BULLOCK, W., Six Months’ Residence and Travels in Mexico

BULLOCK, W. Six Months’ Residence and Travels in Mexico, London: John Murray, 1824. Octavo, first edition, pp. xii, 532, plus 15 aquatint plates (four hand-colored costume plates, 11 plates of landscape and seascape views), folding frontis (View of the City and Valley of Mexico), two folding maps, folding table (distances between cities and towns), contemporary marbled paper-covered boards half-bound in black calf, rebacked with dark green calf with a lighter green label, gilt lettering and rules. Very good with former owner’s name inked onto free front endpaper, boards rubbed at extremities, scattered light to moderate foxing. See Sabin 9140, Abbey 666, Palau 37059. Sabin says, “This author was the first English traveler in Mexico since Father Gage, in 1640, to write an account of his travels,” but this is open to question. In any case, the illustration is important and interesting, showing a plan for the City of Mexico based on the map made by Garcia Conde. Bullock was certainly an unusual travel writer, as not only does he describe the daily life and interesting features of the country, but also how he took control of a silver mine in Themascaltepec.

S.S. Manhattan arrives in New York Harbor, Fairchild Aerial Surveys
16 Fairchild Aerial Surveys S.S. Manhattan arrives in New York Harbor

FAIRCHILD AERIAL SURVEYS, S.S. Manhattan arrives in New York Harbor, undated (1932). 15x19.5 inches or 38x50cm, gelatin silver print, framed under glass on its original mount, Fairchild credit in the negative, labeled on the mount. The background provides a beautifully clear view of the lower Manhattan skyline, with the long-gone aquarium in Battery Park at right center (the round building). The ship was launched in 1931, at the outset of the Depression, and was considered an expensive gamble on the part of its owner, United States Lines. As the label says, at the time of their construction, the Manhattan and its sister ship, the Washington, were the largest liners ever built in the U.S. According to Wikipedia, the Manhattan served trans-Atlantic routes and during World War II was a troop ship, being scrapped after the war. Condition of this print" A few areas of foxing in the sky, faint silvering to the dark areas around the hull, overall very good.

QE2 passing the World Trade Center, FORSS, George.
20 FORSS, George. QE2 passing the World Trade Center

FORSS, GEORGE. QE2 passing the World Trade Center, New York, 1977 (printed August 1983). Gelatin silver print, about 13x18 inches or 33x46cm, matted and framed at 18x24 or 46x61cm, stylus-indented signature by Forss in the lower right corner, other stylus notes giving photo and print dates and the lens used ("50mm XENON"). Forss was an unknown New York City street photographer who reputedly got discovered in 1980 by David Douglas Duncan, a Life magazine photographer who was stopped in his tracks by the Forss image on sale here. Since then Forss has been the subject of serious media attention and has removed himself to upstate New York. The print here is exceptionally large, larger than similar prints that have sold at auction at a higher price. I temporarily removed it from the frame to photograph it glare-free. The signature does not show in my photos because it is simply an indentation in the print, involving no ink or graphite. Condition of this print: Fine, no flaws; minor blemishing to the Plexiglas cover.
