Manufactured Landscapes, BURTYNSKY,Edward.
1 BURTYNSKY,Edward. Manufactured Landscapes
0300099436 / 9780300099430
BURTYNSKY, EDWARD. Manufactured Landscapes, The Photographs of Edward Burtynsky, Ottawa: National Gallery of Canada. Folio, exhibition catalog, pp. 160, black cloth boards with silver lettering to spine, color plates. The present copy is a seventh printing, which is a remarkable statement to make for an exhibition catalog, which typically wouldn't sell out a single printing. The photographer has made a career of picturing massive industrial projects and their affects on the land, and he gives us fascinating images of beauty and ugliness, sometimes in the same photo. Condition of this book: Fine, no flaws.

Birds Beasts and Fishes of the Norfolk Broadland, EMERSON, P.H.
2 EMERSON, P.H. Birds Beasts and Fishes of the Norfolk Broadland

EMERSON, P.H. Birds Beasts and Fishes of the Norfolk Broadland, London: David Nutt, 1895. Octavo, first edition, pp. xix, 396, 3 (Opinions of the Press), blue-green cloth boards with gilt lettering on spine, green lettering and labeling on upper panel with image of three swimming ducks, halftone photos by T.A. Cotton. Former owners' names and bookseller ticket on pastedowns. It is sad to note that Emerson, one of the greatest photographers of the 19th century, did not take the pictures, as he had given up on photography as an art by this time. See the Eastman House's Imagining Paradise, p. 194: "Depicts the Norfolk coastal landscape as a holistic ecosystem and in a sense parallels Emerson's first book about the region, Life and Landscape on the Norfolk Broads. ... He constantly cites his own observations as a basis of contradicting expert consensus." Condition of this book: Spine sunned, edges lightly worn, images fine.

Islay, ROSS, John
5 ROSS, John Islay

ROSS, JOHN. Islay, London: GF Smith, 2007. Large folio, unpaginated with 16 leaves, wraps, 15 double-page images. Landscapes mostly of beaches on Islay, a Hebrides island known for whiskey production. These prints are very large, 19x25 inches or 48x64cm, done on Zen paper, which the publisher tells us is "engineered with a special surface coating which will produce the finest quality print yet retain the look and feel of an uncoated paper." The photographer writes: "It was liberating to roam the beaches and cliffs ... and the 'rockscapes' they form. They have the most perfect graphic quality. ... The cliffs and rocks were not so much raised out of the sea, but seemed as if an incredible force had literally thrown them out." The emphasis on form here is reminiscent of the work of Minor White. Condition of this book: Lacks slipcase, covers lightly worn, overall very good.
