A Monograph of the Work of McKim Mead & White 1879-1915, McKim, Mead & White
16 McKim, Mead & White A Monograph of the Work of McKim Mead & White 1879-1915

[Architecture.] A Monograph of the Work of McKim Mead & White 1879-1915, four volumes, New York: Architectural Book Publishing, 1915. Elephant folios about 20x15 inches or 51x38 cm, buckram bindings, each book with 100 single-side-print collotype plates (some are misnumbered), no text except for the captions and the tables of contents. De-accessioned by the Iowa State College Library with that library's rubberstamps and other markings, very sturdy with leaves attached to the bindings by linen stubs, covers worn and scuffed, normal age toning inside, occasional minor staining, a few neat tape repairs. (Plate 100 appears at the end of Vol. 1 and again, in facsimile, at the beginning of Vol. 2.) Overall good and sound. Very heavy, totals more than 60 pounds or 25kg. Worldcat turns up numerous copies in institutional libraries, but this set is scarce in the marketplace. It is important not only to architectural but also New York history collections, with fascinating looks at bygone buildings, including interiors and schematics. The architects were probably the greatest and most prolific American designers of the Beaux Arts period, and shown here are there finest achievements, from massive public buildings like Penn Station to mansions, banks, retail stores, and lesser structures such as university gates. Most of the work shown is in the Northeast and Midwest, with one project in Italy.

Leslie's Monthly, July 1902, OWEN, Robert Emmett.
19 OWEN, Robert Emmett. Leslie's Monthly, July 1902

OWEN, ROBERT EMMETT. Leslie's Monthly, Martinique Disaster, July 1902. Measures about 14.5x23 inches or 36x59cm, with linen back adding another 2 inches to all sides, advertising Leslie's magazine. The artist (1878-1957) is largely remembered as a painter of rural New Hampshire life, but here he took on commercial work, creating a spectacular image to plug a news story about the Martinique volcano disaster of 1902. Condition of this print: It's darkened with age but otherwise has been brought up to fine quality by a professional conservator, who repaired short tears at the edges. The linen-backing process caused some slight bleeding of the red coloration.
