Le SAGE, ALAIN RENE. Histoire de Gil Blas de Santillane, Paris: J.J. Dubochet, 1838. Quarto, later edition, pp. 829. marbled paper-covered boards half-bound in morocco, about 600 illustrations by Jean Gigoux including frontispiece and two title pages. All text in French. "This later edition of Gil Blas, one of several, testifies to the vast popularity of Gigoux's illustrations," says Gordon Ray in The Art of the French Illustration Book, 215. Gigoux reportedly had a low opinion of the engravers used here, "Yet ... his designs were sometimes realized with verve and precision," Ray writes. "Certainly their inventiveness is unfailing." Also see Carteret III, 386 and Vicaire 341. Condition of this book: Boards worn, upper joint splitting. Leaves clean and tight, occasional foxing. A small strip has been cut out of the first title page, apparently to remove the name of the original owner.
