ANONYMOUS. Tibetan sutra, no place, no date (18th or 19th century). Large, oblong stack of 218 leaves contained by carved hardwood boards, the whole measuring 24x8x4.5 inches or 71x20x12cm, four leaves illuminated with paintings of deities, the rest a manuscript presentation of Buddhist life lessons. Each of the boards is decorated at one end with carvings of Buddhas, and the calligraphy is written along red rules, some of the text being in red also. Generally both sides of each leaf have text; paper is rag with occasional parchment. Shipping weight will be about 14 pounds or 6.5 kilograms. Provenance: from the estate of an American antiques dealer who received it as a gift from another American traveling in Nepal when she purchased this sutra in the mid- to late 20th century. Prior history unknown. Condition of this object: Browned at edges, occasional worming, staining and chipping with no loss of content, heavy age toning throughout, one leaf has lost a corner and a bit of text, boards show stains and nicks, but overall, good and sound.
