VAN RENSSELAER, MRS. JOHN KING. Newport, Our Social Capital, Philadelphia and London: Lippincott, 1905. Heavy quarto, copy No. 131 of 347, pp. 401, color frontis, photo plates, quarter-bound brown cloth boards recently rebacked, gilt lettering on spine, gilt lettering and nautical-themed heraldic decoration inside gilt border on upper panel, 2 maps in rear pocket, top edge gilt, other edges untrimmed. Except for the watercolor frontispiece, the illustrations are drawn tritone headpieces and insets, photogravures and halftones of a very high quality for their era. Indeed no expense was spared anywhere in this book, which uses heavy linen stock throughout and tissue guards for the illustrations. Although the extensive illustration dwells lovingly on the luxury of Newport, Mrs. Van Rensselaer's subject matter is actually local history and Newport's role in American history. The maps measure about 22x11 inches and 20x25 inches. Condition of this book: Boards discolored in small areas and rubbed at extremities, very sound. Gift inscription penciled onto free front endpaper, leaves clean and tight, images fine. Maps near fine with small areas of toning at the creases of the larger map.
