Title: 15 signed prints, Alchan folio
Seller ID: Clergue Alchan
Lucian Clergue's Alchan Editions portfolio of 15 signed prints, dated on the reverse either 1982 or 1983. Gelatin silver, measuring about 15.5x11.5 inches or 39x29cm, in mattes but easily removed for alternative framing (no glue or tape used), in original dark blue clamshell box, signed by Clergue under the images, dated on the reverse with a statement verifying that Clergue did the printing. There is no statement of edition size, but Clergue generally printed his photos in editions of 20, according to Lee Witkin and Barbara London's "The Photograph Collector's Guide," p. 111. Subjects include Clergue's trademark nudes in blazing sunlight and foaming surf, Picasso at the beach, bullfighting, landscapes, child acrobats, a gypsy family, nude in Yosemite, nude in a limestone quarry, nude at Zabriskie Point, Nude Blind Shadow. Clergue's prints regularly sell individually at auction but it is unusual to find such a large and fine collection. The introduction says: "This portfolio ... represents some of the themes essential to Clergue's artistic and personal outlook and to his photographic repertoire. If one characteristic were to be assigned to each of these images it would be that of contradiction. Thus we see the use of the nude figure, for which Clergue is perhaps best known, interrelated with the drama of the landscape."
