Folio, first edition, pp. 183, cream-colored cloth boards with black lettering to spine, color and gravure illustration, pamphlet issued for Penn's 1960 show at Iolas Gallery is laid in here. Penn's first book and probably his most enthusiastically collected. Roth, p. 158: "Penn reinvented the classic daytime studio portrait for a more casual time, undercutting its formality but heightening its potential as a revealing performance." Also see Frizot's New History of Photography, p. 550: "The apparent simplicity of Irving Penn's compositions conceals a formal complexity. It is the result of the particular elegance of the model's outline, of the abstract interplay of lines and shapes, of empty and filled space." Condition of this book: Fine in lightly worn, bright jacket, sunned at spine with a few marks. The slipcase is dust-darkened at the top edge, lightly soiled but sturdy.
